KANSAS MAN WINS BAREBACK RIDING

Abilene Rodeo Winnings Help Realize Goal

Abilene, Kansas – August 2, 2009 – Jared Keylon just moved another step closer to his goals.

Goal number one?  A house on ten acres near Uniontown, Kansas, just 15 miles west of Ft. Scott.

Goal number two?  A ranking in the top 15 bareback riders in the world, and a berth at the National Finals Rodeo, pro rodeo’s annual world championship held in December in Las Vegas.

Keylon’s 86 point ride at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo this weekend won him first place and put a check for $1,669 towards the house and helped the bareback rider solidify his spot at number 16 in the world rankings.

And it’s a down payment on a house for the Ft. Scott, Kans. man.  He and his wife are working on putting together a little place for themselves, and every winning check helps.

He wasn’t sure he’d even to Abilene to compete.  “I was a little sore and tired and debated on whether to go (to Abilene).”  But his traveling partner and his younger brother were competing in Abilene, so he decided to come.

And it was a good thing he did.  A buddy of his told him his horse, a bareback horse named Big Momma, was a good one and he could make a good ride on her.

Keylon is the 2008 Prairie Circuit champion, the regional championship for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association.  And 2009 has been even better. The top 15 competitors in each event go to pro rodeo’s world championship, the National Finals Rodeo, and Keylon is currently ranked number 16.  “I’m hanging around the bottom side

“I’ve been really blessed.  I couldn’t be more thankful,” the humble Keylon said.  He won the big winter rodeos in Odessa, Texas and Denver, Colo., and his year has kept rolling.  “I’m hanging around the bottom side of the top 15, and it’s really crunch time for me right now.  We’re rodeoing pretty hard.”

The money he won in Abilene is more money to get him closer to his world championship goal and a focus for him when he’s on the road, traveling hard.  “It’s a different life,” Keylon said, referring to rodeo competitors’ lifestyles.  “I couldn’t be happier.  It’s always fun because you get to be with your friends.”

Other champions for the 64th annual Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo were crowned.  Steer wrestler Jason Lahr, Stephenville, Texas, won with a time of 4.0 seconds.  The saddle bronc riding was split between Billy Etbauer, Edmond, Okla. and Jesse James Kirby, Dodge City, Kansas.  Both cowboys had a score of 86 points.  The tie down roping was won by Tuf Cooper, Decatur, Texas, with a time of 7.1 seconds.  Barrel racer Tiffany Fox, Fox, Okla. ran the barrels with a time of 17.06 seconds.  Team ropers Chad Masters, Clarksville, Tenn. and Jade Corkill, Fallon, Nev. had a time of 3.9 seconds to be champions, and bull rider Cody Whitney, Asher, Okla. scored 91 points to win.

The Andrews Rodeo Co. provided bucking horses and bulls for the eleventh year at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo.  Owner Sammy Andrews is a third generation livestock contractor who had nine of their bareback horses and bucking bulls selected to buck at the 2008 NFR.

Next year’s Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo will be held August 4-7, 2010.
